Glass Jars Buyer's Guide: Size, Lid, Bulk Pricing

A quick, opinionated walkthrough for picking the right glass jar from our lineup. Written for the customer who would rather get the answer once than read a six-page brochure.

Start with what you are storing

The single best filter for choosing a glass jar is the contents. Everything else — lid type, color, label finish — is a downstream choice from this one.

Contents Recommended size Lid type
Lip balm, lip gloss, jewelry findings 5ml to 9ml Easy-open or CR
Medicines, vitamins, supplements 3oz to 5oz Child-resistant
Pantry: flour, oats, beans, coffee 18oz CR if small kids, easy-open otherwise
Honey, syrups, viscous foods 3oz to 5oz Easy-open with silicone sleeve
Sample products for Etsy or markets 5ml to 7ml Easy-open screw-top

CR or easy-open: which one

If small children, grandchildren, or pets visit your home, default to child-resistant for anything you would not want them to open. The CR lids on our jars meet ASTM D3475 and require two simultaneous motions to open — adults find this easy after the first try, kids generally cannot.

Easy-open lids are the right choice when frequent, low-friction access matters more than safety. Examples: spices you reach for nightly, your own desk-drawer pens.

Both lid types are part of the matching set — they share the same silhouette and finish.

The matching set

Most jar retailers sell every size in slightly different glass or with slightly different lid colors. The result is a pantry that looks busy. We built our line to match across sizes — every CR jar carries the same matte black lid and the same straight-wall silhouette.

One customer review put it best: "I bought 24 of these to redo my pantry. The visual difference is huge. Worth every penny."

Frequently asked

How do I pick the right glass jar size?

Start with what you are storing. 5ml to 9ml jars hold lip balms, lip glosses, jewelry findings, or sample-sized lotions. 3oz to 5oz jars hold pantry staples like spices, dry herbs, or single-serve nuts. 7ml to 18oz jars cover larger pantry, candle, and bulk storage. The 18oz size is the most popular for visible pantry organization, the 3oz for medicine consolidation.

What does child-resistant mean?

A child-resistant lid meets ASTM D3475 or US 16 CFR 1700. It requires two simultaneous actions, usually press-and-turn, that adults find easy but children under 5 generally cannot operate. Required by law for certain products in many states. Useful even when not required if you have small children, grandchildren, or pets in the home.

Are your glass jars dishwasher safe?

Yes. All our glass jars are borosilicate or soda-lime glass, top-rack dishwasher safe. The black CR lids are also top-rack dishwasher safe, though hand washing extends their seal life slightly.

Will my jars actually match across sizes?

Yes. That is the point. The matching set across our line was designed so that 5ml, 9ml, 3oz, 5oz, and 18oz CR jars all carry the same matte black lid and the same straight-wall silhouette. Mix sizes on one shelf and they read as a set.

What is the difference between CR and easy-open?

Child-resistant lids require two simultaneous motions to open. Easy-open lids twist off normally. Pick CR for medicine cabinets, pantries with small kids around, or regulated products. Pick easy-open when frequent access without effort matters more than safety.

Can I use these jars for food?

Yes. All our glass is food-safe. The black CR lids are BPA-free polypropylene. For oils, vinegars, or other strongly acidic contents, glass is the right choice over any plastic.

How does the bulk discount work?

Automatic at checkout. Buy 5+ of any jar line and the 5 percent tier applies. Buy 10+ and 10 percent applies. Buy 25+ and 15 percent applies. Only one tier applies, the best one. No code needed.

Do you ship the same day?

Orders placed by 2pm Pacific ship the same business day from Bellingham, WA. After 2pm, expect next business day shipping.

Are your jars airtight?

Yes. The CR pop-top design forms an airtight seal. We tested by storing brown sugar in a sealed jar for 30 days — it stayed soft.

Can I order custom-printed jars?

Yes. See our custom printing collection or email joshua@kraftandkitchen.com for runs over a few hundred units.

Still not sure? Email joshua@kraftandkitchen.com with what you are storing and we will pick the size for you.
